2.8 Data Analysis
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results, communicate findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
Artifact: Data Overview
Reflection:
The artifact demonstrating mastery of this standard is a Data Overview presented in ITEC 7305 on April 16, 2013. The purpose of this Data Overview was to use data to draw attention to and start conversations related to student achievement at Hollydale Elementary School. In addition to presenting a variety of data sources (demographic and achievement), the presentation highlighted current strengths, weaknesses, and longitudinal trends evidenced by the data.
This Data Overview provides evidence of mastery of Standard 2.8, Data Analysis. For this task, numerous digital tools and resources were utilized to access, compile, organize, and represent the quantitative information. Charts, tables, and graphs were developed using Excel to represent the information in a visually appealing, meaningful, and concise manner. In addition, the findings of this overview were communicated with peers and appropriate school and classroom interventions related to the data findings were discussed.
From this task, I gained a much deeper understanding of student learning and achievement at the local school level. Diving deeply into the data allowed me to see school wide strengths and weaknesses and provided insight into achievement trends. I found that, as a school, there was consistent growth in many content areas but that there were consistent weaknesses in others. In the future, provided there was an opportunity and access to relevant data, I would be interested in comparing the data from Hollydale Elementary School to the data at schools with similar student populations. I feel that this would be an effective way to extend this project and further increase the learning and improvement process.
Upon completion of the Data Overview, I had the opportunity to share this project with many of my colleagues. Using the embedded discussion slides, we engaged in powerful conversation about the data. From this discussion, we isolated specific areas for improvement and discussed a potential plan for strengthening the areas of weakness. The knowledge gained from this learning experience will help me be a more effective member of my school data team and school strategic planning team. The ultimate goal of both of these teams is to improve student learning as evidenced by increased student achievement. It is sufficient to say that this assignment prepared me to be a more effective contributor to the school improvement teams at my school.
