3.2 Managing Digital Tools and Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences.
Artifact: Historical Figures WebQuest
Reflection:
In the Spring semester of 2012, I developed a WebQuest for ITEC 7445. This artifact, a WebQuest, is aligned to the third grade Georgia Performance Standards related to historical figures and focuses on Paul Revere. In this WebQuest, students explore a variety of multimedia resources and utilize multiple digital tools to acquire knowledge and complete a series of application tasks related to Paul Revere.
Standard 3.2, Managing Digital Tools and Resources, establishes expectations for management and integration of digital tools and resources throughout student learning experiences. Throughout the planning and development of this WebQuest, a variety of digital tools and resources were explored, field tested, and evaluated. These resources were then integrated into a student-centered, thematic WebQuest. The result of the management of these resources is evident in this WebQuest, which contains multiple online and software based tools and resources to enhance the student learning experience.
All aspects of building this WebQuest were meaningful learning experiences. Through planning for and developing this resource, I learned about numerous digital tools and resources that can be integrated to enhance student learning and increase student engagement. Because new resources are constantly emerging and available tools are continuously evolving, I found resources that can help me track these advancements and utilize them in the classroom. This knowledge will certainly be helpful as I continue to infuse technology with student learning experiences. If given the opportunity to further develop this WebQuest, I would like to incorporate additional tools and resources to expand the learning choices for students. By providing more choice, related to the tools and resources, students take a more active role in the learning process and assume a deeper responsibility for learning.
Because this WebQuest was implemented with my students, I was able to determine the impact on student learning. After analysis of student artifacts and performance on a related assessment, I found that nineteen of my twenty students met or exceeded the standards related to Paul Revere as a historical figure. This WebQuest, and the utilization of the related tools and resources certainly impacted student learning. In addition, ideas about WebQuest development were shared with a variety of colleagues. Ideally, this dissemination of information will lead to more teachers developing digital learning experiences in the classroom. This will likely positively impact student learning and will facilitate professional learning for the teachers.
