Artifact: Supporting Learners with Special Needs Presentation
Reflection:
The artifact provided to support Standard 3.4 is a PowerPoint presentation developed to outline the use of technology to support students with special needs. This presentation covers assistive technologies, adaptive technologies, and provides information about supporting diverse learners in an online setting. Developed collaboratively with three other classmates, this presentation was delivered in a synchronous online class session for ITEC 7482 in April 2013.
Standard 3.4 explains the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. Assistive technology is one of the first topics shared in this presentation. A variety of these resources, from speech-to-text software to screen readers, are discussed. The presentation then goes on to outline ways in which technological resources are used to support the learning needs of students with specific disabilities. Multiple physical and cognitive abilities are specifically outlined in the presentation, and ways in which adaptive and assistive technologies can support these learners in an online setting are discussed.
Learning about assistive and adaptive technologies proved to be a positive and relevant learning experience. In conducting research for this project, and learning more about these technology related resources, I found great information about supporting diverse learners in the traditional classroom and in the online setting. This project opened my eyes to tools and resources that can help diverse learners be successful in a variety of learning experiences. I was actually able to use the information from this project in an IEP meeting for one of my students. Knowing about available assistive technologies to support specific disabilities helped me contribute ideas for ways to support a specific student. While I am pleased with this presentation, collaboratively developed with my colleagues, I would like to further share this information with others. Delivering this presentation to my classmates was helpful, but in the future, I would like to share it with my colleagues. This is information that could be beneficial to many teachers and many students.
Supporting the needs of diverse learners is an essential component of teaching in today’s classroom. Learning about assistive and adaptive technologies helps prepare me to be a more effective facilitator of learning. This information will help me as I support the diverse learning needs of my students. In addition, this information is relevant to many of my colleagues and could provide valuable professional learning information for other teachers. By preparing the teachers to utilize assistive and adaptive technologies, the needs of all student learners are positively impacted.
