Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies.
Artifact: Communication Guide
Reflection:
This artifact, a communication guide, was developed to establish expectations for appropriate communication in an online setting. This project was developed in the summer of 2012 for ITEC 7480. This guide was designed to help students and parents, participating in an online learning course, to better understand safe, appropriate, and healthy online communication. Types of online communication, directions for participating in online communication, expectations for asynchronous communication, and netiquette are all included in this artifact.
Safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technologies are outlined in Standard 4.2. This guide was developed to share information with online learning stakeholders about how to safely and appropriately communicate in the online setting. In this communication guide, information about safe digital communication is discussed and stakeholders are apprised of potential dangers in online communication. Information about appropriately sharing information from other sources and providing citations are also outlined in this document. This artifact goes on to establish online etiquette, or netiquette, to help participants be healthy contributors to the online learning environment.
Without question, there are many concerns related to the safety of online learning environments. Prior to completing this project, I shared many of these concerns. Surprisingly, this task made me more comfortable with the safety of the online setting. In developing this assignment, I completed in-depth research related to safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of digital tools and information. This helped me better understand the ways in which an online instructor can foster security in this setting, starting with communication guidelines. Through this experience, I gained extensive knowledge about communication in the online setting and about facilitating healthy and appropriate interaction among participants. While I am pleased with this artifact, I would like to further expand this guide to include more information about the legal aspects of utilizing digital information and technology. Covering more information about this field would certainly improve the quality of this communication guide.
In order for meaningful student learning to occur, participants must be in a safe and healthy learning environment. This document was used to facilitate the safe and healthy learning environment in the online course I developed. Because this was a productive and secure learning environment, the third grade students were active participants in an authentic learning course. This is evidenced by high levels of student achievement on performance tasks and assessments embedded in the online course. Furthermore, the information in this communication guide was shared with other educators and utilized to enhance communication in the traditional classroom.
