Artifact: Faculty Training Presentation- Pinterest in Education
Reflection:
This artifact, a PowerPoint presentation, delivered to select faculty at Hollydale Elementary, highlights potential uses for Pinterest in the classroom. I developed and implemented this presentation in collaboration with two other students, Kirsten Allen and Wendy Goldberg. The presentation introduces Pinterest, outlines uses, and provides relevant and meaningful ideas for integrating Pinterest into education. Through this professional development presentation, teachers were introduced to the logistical elements of Pinterest and were provided time to apply their learning by creating boards, pinning resources, and sharing educational resources. This assignment was completed as a course requirement for ITEC 7460 and was presented in the Fall of 2012.
For this presentation, my group and I planned for and developed a technology-based professional learning experience to deliver to select faculty at Hollydale Elementary School. We began by outlining our objectives and aligning our desired outcomes with state and national professional learning standards. We used a variety of technology related resources to deliver the content and to share information with participants. Each element of the presentation and related resources were developed to align with the principles and theories of adult learning. The presentation was carefully structured to provide the concepts and information in a clear, concise, and meaningful manner. In addition, in accordance with best practices in teaching and learning, we embedded application tasks and time into the presentation to allow participants to more fully engage in the learning process.
In addition to learning valuable information about Pinterest as an educational resource, I gained a deeper understanding of adult learning. This task allowed me to experience, first-hand, concepts of adult learning theory and instruction that I had learned about through coursework and readings. Seeing how each piece of the presentation came together to ensure a positive learning experience for the participants was a very eye opening experience. Experiencing first-hand the importance of application time and follow through, helped me better understand the concepts learned in the classroom. To improve this learning experience, I would have appreciated the opportunity to share this presentation to the entire staff. While it was a positive learning experience to present this information to a grade level team, I think presenting on a larger-scale would certainly enhance the learning experience.
Integration of technology into instructional practices clearly has the potential to positive impact professional development and student learning. From this presentation, I was able to share a valuable resource with my peers and to develop digital collaboration boards, in the form of Pinterest boards. With this resource, my grade level team has been able to share lesson ideas, management strategies, and professional resources. Each of these elements impacts the school improvement process. While this presentation was delivered on a small scale, it is my hope that the Pinterest learning experience provided to the teachers impacted the learning experience being facilitated in the classroom.
