5.3 Program Evaluation
Candidates design and implement program evaluations to determine the overall effectiveness of professional learning on deepening teacher content knowledge, improving teacher pedagogical skills and/or increasing student learning.
Artifact: ActivInspire Training Evaluation
Reflection:
This artifact is a link to an evaluation that accompanied an ActivInspire professional development workshop I facilitated. I developed this program evaluation to solicit feedback on the effectiveness, relevance, impact, and efficiency of the workshop. The survey includes items to answer on a Likert Scale as well as open-ended responses for qualitative feedback. This survey was administered to participants after the workshop in June of 2012. This survey was developed and distributed digitally, through Survey Monkey.
Standard 5.3, Program Evaluation, outlines the design and implementation of program evaluation to determine the effectiveness of professional learning experiences. As stated above, I designed, developed, and administered this survey to solicit feedback about the effectiveness of a professional development workshop I facilitated. The survey was constructed to gain information about the relevance of the content, the impact on pedagogical skills, and the potential impact on student achievement. The results of this survey were utilized to evaluate the presentation and to guide decisions about improvements and modifications to the content and delivery.
In addition to gaining great experience through this ActivInspire workshop, I gained great insight through administering this survey. Prior to developing this survey, I did extensive research on evaluation instruments for technology-based professional development. This information guided me through item development and helped me better understand what was most important in this workshop. In preparing for the specifics of the presentation, I continually referenced this survey to ensure that I was aligning the presentation with the expectations of the evaluation, knowing the evaluation represented best practices in professional development. Analyzing the feedback was also an informative process. I found that the participants considered the content to be highly relevant and were prepared to begin implementation in their classrooms. Many of the participants also indicated a desire for follow-up support to continue progressing in this area. Unfortunately, because most of the participants in the workshop were at other schools, I was only able to follow up through e-mail. If given the opportunity to improve this overall experience, I would certainly provide face-to-face follow up, to further support participants.
Professional development is essential to effective instructional practices and student learning. Teachers must be prepared to meet the changing demands of today’s classroom and must be aware of constantly evolving practices and information. In order for professional development experiences to be effective, they must be evaluated. Furthermore, the feedback from evaluations must be used to enhance the quality and caliber of the professional development session. Through this experience, I gained feedback that led me to make modifications that enhanced the ActivInspire workshop for future participants.
