Artifact: Literature Review
Reflection:
The artifact for Standard 6.1 is a literature review completed for ITEC 7470 and was completed in summer 2013. This stand-alone literature review provides a detailed summary of how technology is used to increase parental involvement. The literature review focuses on the uses of technology to increase parental involvement and the results of the application. The topic of this literature review was selected to align with the purpose and objectives of my capstone project.
Standard 6.1, Continuous Learning, outlines expectations for continual growth in knowledge and skills of emerging technologies and application to improve professional practice. For this assignment, I deeply explored an emerging trend in education, using technology to increase parental involvement. I located and researched many sources of information on this topic to build my knowledge and understanding. In addition, I applied this learning in design and development of my capstone project, a digital parent resource center. This learning experience required me to address and apply each component of the standard.
Completing this literature review was a new and empowering experience. First, I learned a significant amount of information about the usage of technology to increase parental involvement. I learned that, while this is an emerging practice, it has shown to be highly successful in the available research. In addition, through this assignment and the related coursework, I learned about locating, utilizing, and analyzing a variety of literature sources to gather and share information. This experience showed me that with the availability of continually evolving digital resources, it is possible to become an expert in just about any educational field. If given the opportunity to further develop this assignment, I would develop a concise and direct presentation of this information to share with others. Because I found the information to be highly relevant and informative, I think it would be beneficial to share with others. Developing a presentation to help communicate this information would have been a meaningful addition to this experience.
As indicated by a variety of literature sources and studies, parental involvement is a significant component of student success. In this experience, I learned about cost-effective and meaningful ways to use technology to increase parental involvement in schools. This is information that I will certainly apply in my classroom and will share with professionals within my school. If implemented on a large scale, this application of technology could significantly improve our parental involvement, and ultimately student achievement. In addition, the content gathered from this literature review provides information that would inform and prepare teachers to expand their influence beyond the classroom.
