Artifact: Culturally Aware Global Learners Article
Reflection:
This artifact is a link to an article I composed in April of 2012. The article focuses on ways in which internet tools and digital resources can be utilized to facilitate the growth and development of culturally aware, global learners. Current trends in education are discussed and examples of educational programs that are fostering cultural understanding and development in young learners are shared in this article. In addition to being shared with my classmates and colleagues, this article was published on my educational blog.
Standard 4.3 establishes the importance of utilizing digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global learning. This article specifically addresses several elements of Standard 4.3. First, the article outlines specific ways in which digital tools and resources can be utilized to increase cultural awareness and facilitate global communication and collaboration. For example, the article shares a scenario in which two classrooms, across the world, become “e-pals” through digital communication. Each classroom learns about the cultural of the other classroom as they embark on a series of electronic correspondences. In addition, this article outlines ways in which global learning and communication can be facilitated through online resources.
Learning how to utilize technology to expand the walls of my classroom has been a cornerstone of my learning experience at Kennesaw State University. Through this reflective article and the learning experiences it captured, I was able to articulate my vision for how technology can be used to help prepare culturally understanding and globally aware students. In writing this article, I realized how complacent today’s classroom can be, especially when it comes to expanding student understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and global learning. Writing this article helped me better understand what I need to do as a teacher and as a technology leader to expand the learning experiences of my students, beyond the four classroom walls.
Student learning is the ultimate goal of our educational system. Unfortunately, state standards, mandates, and other initiatives have prevented many schools and teachers from fostering and developing global awareness in the classroom. Technology offers a limitless opportunity to facilitate dynamic learning experiences that expand cultural awareness and facilitate global learning in the traditional classroom setting. Facilitating these experiences will contribute to increased student learning as well as students more prepared to compete in a 21st Century global society.
