Artifact: Instructional Technology Coaching Journal
Reflection:
As a learning experience for ITEC 7460, I provided coaching in instructional technology to a colleague at Hollydale Elementary School. The artifact provided is my initial coaching journal, reflecting upon this coaching experience in the fall of 2012. In this journal entry, I share the coaching strategies employed, the level of coaching, the skills and affective changes, challenges and solutions, and reflections for future practice.
As stated in Standard 6.2, regular evaluation and reflection on personal practice and disposition is essential to the learning process. This artifact demonstrates high levels of reflective analysis of a personal, coaching experience. In this reflective journal, I share highlights and challenges associated with this experience and develop ideas and improvements for future coaching experiences. I used this journal entry to ignite the reflection process needed to assess current progress and make decisions for continual improvement. In essence, this artifact demonstrates my evaluation and reflection of a personal practice designed to strengthen my ability to model, coach, and facilitate technology-based learning experiences.
The coaching experience reflected in this journal entry was a dynamic learning experience. It provided me the opportunity to work one-on-one with a colleague, at their level, to enhance integration of technology-based resources. As stated in this artifact, from this experience, I learned the importance of follow-through in technology related learning. Sharing ideas and explaining a concept does not ensure that a resource will be implemented effectively. The continual reinforcement, check-in, and support after the initial instruction are the most powerful elements. I also learned that, through reflective practices, one can advance in their knowledge and skills. Sitting down and analyzing this experience helped me plan for changes and improvements that enhanced the learning experience for me and my colleague. If given the opportunity to expand this learning experience, I would extend the coaching relationship beyond the requirements of the assignment. I think this would have allowed me to continue refining my coaching skills and would have supported my colleague in additional ways.
Reflective practices are vital at the individual teacher level, at the school level, and beyond. Learning how to authentically evaluate personal practices and plan for future improvements is the way in which we progress. School improvement, including student learning and professional development is enhanced when reflective practices are implemented. This experience taught me, as a teacher and a coach, how to be a more reflective professional. This facilitated my personal and professional growth, making me more a more effective teacher. Ultimately, becoming a more effective teacher is a result of professional development and positively impacts the learning of my students.
