Artifact: Online Course Syllabus
Reflection:
As an artifact for Standard 3.3, I am sharing my online course syllabus. This syllabus was developed to communicate course information and expectations for the hybrid online course I created. This syllabus serves to establish the course background information as well as to communicate necessary information to students and parents. The syllabus includes detailed information about work submissions, assignments, and policies related to the technology-based course. This syllabus was developed during the online course design process, as an assignment for ITEC 7480. The syllabus was distributed to students participating in the online course in the Spring of 2013.
Standards for online and blended learning experiences are outlined in Standard 3.3. This standard establishes the expectations for online learning, digital content, and learning networks to expand student learning and professional development. This artifact, a syllabus, represents the development and facilitation of an online learning course. This blended learning course utilizes a variety of technology related resources to facilitate the delivery of digital content through a learning network. In addition, this syllabus outlines how the online components of the course will enhance and expand the content being delivered in the classroom.
Developing this artifact proved to be a major professional growth experience. Composing this syllabus, along with building the online course, opened my eyes to many logistical elements of online learning that I had not considered. In composing this syllabus, I had to determine course policies, technological requirements, and assess the digital content to be delivered. While this experience certainly prepared me to be a more effective facilitator of online and blended learning experiences, it was a challenging task. I found it difficult to establish procedures and policies related to constantly evolving and advancing online learning technology. However, through the experience, I acquired strategies and skills to help me address this challenge. I feel that developing this syllabus helped me be a more effective communicator and facilitator of learning, especially in the online environment.
The world of online learning is rapidly growing and evolving. Emerging data indicates that these online and blended learning experiences are as, if not more effective than traditional classroom experiences. As an educator, learning how to use the power of online and blended learning to facilitate learning experiences for students is vital. We must keep up with these advancements in order to provided relevant learning for students. This project prepared me to be more effective in these areas. Furthermore, learning how to use online and blended learning to facilitate professional development experiences provides more efficient and effective learning experiences for teachers.
