3.7 Communication and Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community.
Artifact: Classroom Website
Reflection:
The artifact included for Standard 3.7 is a link to my classroom website. This website was originally constructed in 2010 and has been continually enhanced since that time. Built using Weebly, this site is a resource used to facilitate communication and collaboration among students, family members, colleagues, and other educators. This website includes basic classroom and teacher information, blogs (one written by me and one written by my students), learning links, and class pictures.
My classroom website is an important digital communication resource, expanding the exchange of information beyond the classroom walls. This resource serves as a primary form of communication with students and family members. Pertinent classroom information and information about our learning experiences are communicated through this website on a daily basis. Students are frequent contributors to this website, using it is a foundation for collaboration with students in other geographic locations. In addition, I use this website to share ideas and strategies with an audience of educators from across the country. Without question, this classroom website serves as a vital digital communication and collaboration tool that facilitates interaction with students, parents, and beyond.
Creating this classroom website has been a powerful learning experience! The initial purpose of the website was to share information with parents. However, as the website has evolved, the communication has become balanced with others, like students, parents, colleagues, contributing substantial information to the site. When students began contributing to the blog, I noticed as the interest and engagement increased significantly. I watched as the website hits went from approximately ten each day to nearly 300. I received feedback from numerous educators that they learned so much from reading the student and parent input. I learned that when students have a voice and vested interest in contributing to a digital resource, it becomes a much more powerful and relevant resource. As I stated, this website is continually expanding. In the next few months, I hope to add a video section to host footage of important lessons and concepts for student and parent reference.
This website has certainly expanded the level of communication between the classroom and the home environment of students. The parents have access to the information being taught on a daily basis. When family members are informed and aware of classroom information and happenings, their involvement tends to increase. An increase in this involvement often enhances student learning. Furthermore, this website serves as a resource for other teachers to gather ideas, supporting professional learning experiences.
